Anyone use CORBA on VAX VMS? Are there Fortran bindings for CORBA

Hi everyone, I am currently involved in a project to convert a legacy telecommunications management system running on DEC VAX VMS to Windows NT. My initial goal is to have NT clients and VMS server utilizing CORBA. Most of the software on the VAX was written in Fortran. What I would propose to do is put a CORBA wrapper on this code and present it as a CORBA server object to CORBA clients residing on the NT. So my questions are : * Are there CORBA Fortran bindings? * Are there any special considerations or provisions for setting up CORBA objects on the VAX VMS? Any feedback is deeply appreciated. Thanks. Regards, Ed Kideys

Almost certainly, but that won't help if the ORB you are using doesn't provide them. Not all ORBs provide all language bindings on all platforms. >* Are there any special considerations or provisions for setting up >CORBA objects on the VAX VMS? Yep, you need an ORB. I'm currently working with BEA's ObjectBroker, which provides, unfortunately, only C and C++ bindings. It's solid, but sadly out of date. BEA inherited it from DEC, and most of their development effort is focused on their new M3 ORB, which isn't available on VMS yet. -- FORTRAN, "the infantile disorder", by now nearly 20 years old, is hopelessly inadequate for whatever computer application you have in mind today: it is too clumsy, too risky, and too expensive to use. -- Edsger W. To date, I haven't seen ANY vendor with Fortran bindings. The OMG has certified a number of languages, Fortran isn't one of them. Less popular or older languages like COBOL, ADA and Smalltalk are certified. I am in the middle of evaluating different ORBs for a OpenVMS/VAX 6.2 environment. Specifically it needs to communicate with IONA's ORB on NT. BEA ObjectBroker failed the test because they are not fully CORBA v2.0 compliant. If you want to use BEA, both client and server have to be written in ObjectBroker. This leads to the dependency of the platform that BEA supports. Strange thing, when BEA created M3, they integrated part of ObjectBroker and made that IIOP-compliant but never updated OB itself. The Object Request Broker market for VAX/VMS is almost none. We are currently using the freeware OmniORB as a test pilot and plan to substitute it with Peerlogic/DAIS when we go to production. IONA only supports Alpha/VMS 7.1. Hopefully with Compaq's commitment to VMS, we will see more future support for both VAX and Alpha. The legacy language we are trying to wrap is Modula-2, which has no binding (probably never will, though ILU does have a beta Modula-3 binding). We got around this by first wrapping the Modula-2 code with C++, then wrapping that with the ORB. This is a case where theory meets reality. The theory is that we can have a legacy systems intercommunicating through a distributed infrastructure. The reality is unless all systems are supported and all languages are bounded, the ideal will fall short of its goal. Lap On Sun, 22 Nov 1998 05:28:09 GMT, jdege@jdege.visi.com (Jeffrey C. Hello All.
i got a problem....i don't know why....
i can't send string array(one dimension).
my interface is..below.
--------------------------------
typedef sequence<string> temp1;
typedef sequence<string> temp2;
typedef sequence<string> temp3;
typedef sequence<string> temp4;
interface MyObject
{
string Work(in string word, in temp1 param1,
in temp2 param2, in temp3 param3,
in temp4 param4);
};
};
---------------------------------------
in my Other program...main()
...
...
MyObject myobj=MyObjectHelper.bind(orb,"lexus MyObj");
.....
String param1=new String[3][10];
String param2=new String[3][10];.
String param3=new String[3][10];.
String param4=new String[3][10];.
....
...
//After Setting param*'s values....
...
String result[]=new String[3];
for(int i=0;i<3;i++)
{
result[i]=new String(Myobj.Work(word,param1[i], <----Exception
Occured!!!
param2[i],param[3],param[4]));
}
-----------------
System Exception :org.omg.CORBA.BAD_PARAM[completed=MAYBE]
Occured....and Process Exit.(process that execute above code)
Implemetation Process is pending...not exit.

Seems like a mismatch to me... in IDL you have:
typedef sequence<string> temp1;
Yet in Java you use:
String param1=new String[3][10];
The Java statement declares a two dimentional array of strings, not a one
dimentional array as the IDL implies. Sounds like your problem. Should be:
String param1=new String[3];

The problem is that one of your strings is null. This is a quirk of the
java mapping for strings. A null is acceptable for an object reference,
but a string is not considered and object. You can correct this by
checking for nulls in the array and setting them to array[x] = ""; and
this will be acceptable. It seems like there might be another situation
where this is the case but I can think of it right now. If you want to
send uninitialized arrays as parameters and get them filled you need to
use the holder object that is associated with your typedef. I hope this
is helpful.
