Re: ACM and E-mail

Thanks to those of you who made comments about the need for a greater use
of e-mail by the ACM:
     Mike Schwartz
     Lillian Israel
     Daniel Faigin
     John R. Levine
     Mark Seiden
     Scott Boyd
     Mary Shaw

I would encourage anyone interested in exploring a membership service to
examine e-math provided by the American Mathematical Society. It is
free of charge usless you need to pay for phone connections to a local
node.
     telnet e-math.ams.com
     login: e-math
     password: e-math
Terminal default type is VT-100, but there are other choices.

The warning at the beginning about unauthorized users may be intended
for hackers, but I doubt that would stop one. The access informatiom
was published in the MAA Focus magazine, September 1991.

At the main menu, you will find Directory Information for the Combined
Membership List of the AMS, MAA, and SIAM, professional opportunities,
software, math reviews classification scheme, math reviews submission,
document delivery, suggestion box, AMS Meetings, Bulletin of the AMS,
Directory of Lists, Help.

Its been in operation since October 1990 and is partially funded by an
NSF grant which may explain why it is still free. An Internet connection
is required.

I haven't used the ACM Network Project and would be interested in any
comparisons between the ACM offerings and the AMS services. Although I do know
the AMS does not act as a mail server, i.e., provide a mailbox service.
However, the AMS model seems to be a very good one to me, and since NSF is
involved, much of the developed software may be available (I don't know for
sure) for others to use. It would be a shame to reinvent the e-mail "wheel" if
this model is usable.

Repeating, telnet e-math.ams.com
           telnet 130.44.1.100

login and password are e-math

To access CML name look-up service, use the main menu or type
     telnet 130.44.1.100 2050 (unix hosts)
     telnet 130.44.1.100/port=2050 (vms hosts)

If you need someone to look up, try:

Sammet Jean State: MD Institution: IBM Membership: MAA or
Aho Alfred State: NJ Institution: Bellcore Membership: SIAM
