Course Description:
-------------------
An overview, including present trends, of Open Systems, Distributed Systems,
and the UNIX/Mach operating systems will be covered. The Open Systems component
includes a discussion of the properties and facilities of multi-vendor and
multi-platform configurations.
Many organizations have had problems managing multiple autonomous networked
computers, especially when their network(s) include a mix of PCs, workstations,
file-servers and back-end mainframes/minicomputers. The problems become
manageable by using the technology of distributed operating systems. The
user interface should be integrated and provide uniformity across the
network(s). The extent to which present day Open Systems meet this requirement
will be discussed. The concepts and techniques needed for the future
development of Open Systems will be presented. Results of the 12th
International Conference on Distributed Systems in Yokohama, Japan are included.
About the Instructor:
