Clay Jackson published a nice note about problems he sees in ACM. I agree
in varying degrees with several of the points he raises, but took exception
to one comment:
> 2) The "quality" of headquarters services has gone down, despite heroic
> efforts on the part of individual staffers
My experience as a SIG officer and more recently in assisting a SIG
conference is that HQ staff has gotten markedly more responsive, largely
due to investment in more and very good staff. (The original SIG support
folks were good, just heavily overworked).
Also, on the side, there's been an exciting development from my point of
view. ACM and IEEE have agreed to publish a joint journal in data
communications (IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking) which will start
publication early next year. One of the joys of this decision is that
instead of having both ACM and IEEE publish high-end journals in this
field, we'll have one journal for both. Note that this effort was spearheaded
by SIGCOMM rather than ACM proper (several folks have noted that the SIGs
are more active and often more rewarding places to volunteer than ACM as
a whole).
