Thanks for the scolding, but it may not be so easy to VOLUNTEER.

I attended the "volunteer's meeting" at a major SIG conference two years ago.
There were only a couple attendees, not counting the 4 or 5 current
volunteers who were also office holders.

They took our names, email adresses, phone numbers, etc.  They told stories
about how this was likely to bring more involvement then we had imagined, 
beginning with adding us to the electronic mailing list for volunteers.

A couple of months later I still had not received any of the promised email.
I sent mail to the Chair of the SIG, including all the pertinant facts --
twice!  Still no response and no mailing list.

I also volunteered to help (in any capacity) at a recently held conference -
no contact other than advertising.

I also emailed a note to our newsletter editor (located in my geographhic 
area) offering to help in any way.  Again twice.  Again NO RESPONSE.

Just busy people I guess.

I have IEEE to be far more interested.  I am a section chair and have been
a newsletter editor.  I have organized a local conference and have generally
received prompt replies and ACTION from other IEEE volunteers.

There is no local section for ACM.  Perhaps I'll pursue that before giving
up completely.
