BACKGROUND FOR EDITORS
DECUS FALL 1992 SEMINARS/SYMPOSIUM TO FEATURE
ALPHA SEMINARS, SESSIONS, PRODUCT DEMONSTRATIONS
During the spring of 1991 several members of the DECUS U.S. Chapter began
discussions with their Digital counterparts on the issue of introducing and
maintaining a flow of Alpha-related information into existing DECUS forums.
The offerings of the DECUS Fall 1992 Seminars and Symposium programs,
scheduled for December 5 - 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, will continue this flow
of information by providing attendees with the latest developments associated
with Digital's 64-bit RISC architecture.
Digital personnel will be on hand to discuss topics in the Alpha hardware,
software, and layered product areas - as well as answer migration questions.
Several sessions will chronicle the experiences of DECUS members who have
successfully ported applications to the Alpha platform. Members of the DECUS
VAX to Alpha Systems Transition (VAST) Initiative will conduct a panel
discussion on their experiences in porting DECUS Library applications from
VAX VMS to Alpha VMS.
A total of 6 one-day seminars will be presented focusing on Alpha-related
issues such as:
* Application coexistence and migration
* Converting VMS applications to RISC VMS on Alpha
* OpenVMS internals for Alpha and VAX
In addition, a number of symposium sessions will also focus on Alpha-related
issues including:
* Alpha migration planning
* Design of Alpha workstation
* Alpha workstation graphics
* Compilers for 64-bit machines
* Port shareable images to Alpha
* Windows NT on Alpha
* Alpha/OSF migration
* Alpha I/O support and concepts
* OpenVMS devise drivers on Alpha
* Mixed architecture VMS clusters
* Alpha VMS memory management
Product demonstrations will feature Alpha machines running OpenVMS and DEC
OSF/1, as well as demonstrations on Alpha and VAX clustering. Equipment
expected to be featured on the exhibit hall floor and in DECUS Special
Interest Group Campgrounds include:
* Alpha desktop workstations
* Alpha deskside workstations
* Alpha departmental systems
* Alpha data center systems
* Alpha mainframes
* Prototype Alpha PC
The diverse offerings presented during the weeklong format of the DECUS
seminars and symposium programs allow attendees to participate in sessions
within their primary interest area as well as to explore new areas of
interest. Forums such as Special Interest Group Campgrounds allow attendees
to meet in an informal atmosphere.
DECUS seminars and symposium attendees have the opportunity to solve their
current computing problems, learn new methods of dealing with everyday
situations, explore new applications and technological advances, and to make
contact with their peers in the computer industry.
