I am getting very concerned about what I have been reading on this newsgroup concerning the SUG election and other matters with SUG. SUG may have a two year requirement to be on the board but as far as I can discern it has NO way to determine if someone in the past has been a member or not. The membership lists and renewals have been screwed up for years. I renewed my membership when I stopped getting readme's since I assumed that meant my membership had lapsed. Upon renewing SUG proceeded to change my first name to a RICHARD which appears nowhere on my membership info. (Actually, this is funny since my brother's name is Richard) The other pressing concern is the question asked by someone on a topic totally unrelated to the board elections. Why become a SUG member? If you happen to be a Usenix member I am unable to supply you with an answer to this question other than discounts on books and the SUG CDs. I can say that our local user group in Houston is active although most of its members are not members of SUG. The SUG board members that I know are very receptive to suggestions about what you the membership would like to see SUG become. So why not send mail to them with suggestions or use this newsgroup as a forum for discussion. Finally, I am concerned about the upcoming SUG meeting in December. I have been to several of these meetings in the past and can recommend them speaking as a sysadmin. My concern is with the lack of meeting PR. The SUG members that I have talked to in Houston got the registration application forms two weeks before the deadline for early registration. I have seen virtually no traffic on the net concerning this meeting. This newsgroup has more about forthcoming usenix meetings than it does about SUG activities. Michael Pearlman <canuck@rice.edu>
