Re: VT100 support In the documentation with the latest Kermit for AOS/VS, it talks about the XLT characteristic for VT100 support, and mentions the need to sysgen this in advance. All our System Generation is done by the software house that supply our library system. They say there may be a price to pay if I ask for VT100, that I might lose some ports on my IACs, but they don't seem to know for sure. My objective is simply to run utilities like PED and SED with MS-Kermit instead of our D211 emulator. I would only need VT100 support for a few lines, say up to 4. Can anyone clarify the limitations of VT100 support ? My set up is AOS/VS 7.67 with three IAC16s of 1987 vintage and one IAC8. David Thomas Brunel University Library Uxbridge Middlesex UB8 3PH

Gawd, it's been a long time since I thought about this, but.....
The code needed for VT100-Dxxx translation takes up quite a bit; The old
IAC/16s had a memory limit that would have cut the ring buffers down to
almost nothing. So, the idea was that for VT100 emulation/translation, you
couldn't specify as many lines on the IAC in order to steal their buffers/
tables/whathaveyou. I believe (but don't take it as Gospel) that the IAC/8,
having scads of memory (relatively speaking) did not have this problem.

You won't lose any of your ports and there's no price to pay. The only
thing to be aware of is that only on IAC-8s and IAC-12s will all the
terminals be able to configured as vt100. IAC-16s simply don't have enough
onboard
memory to support any more than 14 vt100 emulation at a time.

A note when using the escape key. Because all vt100 function key begin
with escape, the escape key is traped by the hardware driver to test whether
the user was pressing a funtion key or not. In this case just press escape
again
and the escape will then be transmitted. Also you would be best to use Kermit's
keymapping facility to map the funtion keys to the DG function keys.

I'd recommend the use of your IAC8. That way you only need to sysgen
one device. You'll also need to set ther characteristics for the terminal
*BEFORE* the user logs on, say when bringing up EXEC.

Well, I hop all of this is of some help.
Cheers,
Paul.
