I have replaced my ALI 486 motherboard and BusLogic 445C SCSI HA (VL-bus) with an Asus TP4XE motherboard (Pentium 120) and a BusLogic 946C (PCI). The 946C will not work. If set for autoconfiguration (JP 4&5 open), the board will just be ignored. If set for manual configuration, the PC will hang after displaying the BusLogic banner from its BIOS. I've tried all sorts of variations in PCI/PnP configuration without any change. An NCR 53c810 HA (also busmastering) in the same slot works fine, but gives a completely different sector translation, which would probably require re-fdisk-ing to solve. It's a miracle that a BusLogic formatted disk will boot on an NCR at all. The other way around does not boot. For now, I'm using an Adaptec 1542CF (ISA), but this is really slow, but the Adaptec uses the same sector translation as the BusLogic. The 946C works just fine in an Intel Premiere II (Pentium 60), although not in auto-configuration mode (gives configuration error). The 946C was set for i/o 330, IRQ 11 (Just like the AHA-1542), INT A, "level" interrupt. The BIOS revision is 4.86, the firmware revision is 4.22, the hardware revision is Ae1. The Asus is running the Award BIOS revision 0111. I do have the MR BIOS flash image, but I'm reluctant to record it, as I read in alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus that there is no way back to the Award BIOS, and in the process you will loose the NCR BIOS, which it seems I am going to need. This is a Rev Ae1 BusLogic card, produced before Plug & Play, and will not work properly in a PNP motherboard. That's why it works fine in the P60 - it was also non-PNP. If you were to have a Rev E 946C, it should work just fine in the ASUS motherboard. If you just bought the 946C, it should still be under warranty and you should return it to your vendor for a Rev E replacement. If it's been around for a while, you may as well put it back to use in the P60 motherboard or equivalent non-PNP system, because nothing you can do to that card will make it work in the ASUS motherboard. There were chipset problems with early PCI motherboards that used ARES chipsets. The problem dealing with interupt conflicts with bus-mastering controllers like the BusLogic 946C were supposedly addresses in the Mercury and later chipsets. I can tell you that re-booting my server would often hang when the controller would start up. After a few attempts it would work. At least it did for about a year and a half. My BusLogic 946C just decided to stop working the other day. Sort of...It recognized the DOS partition on the disk but would not see my Novell partition Guess what I replaced it with... An ADAPTEC AHA-1542. Considering the time pressure I was under to get my file server back up and running it works. Its not PCI but it works. I would check to see what chip sete ASUS uses and see if it possible to get a later one. Hope this helps. Don.

Netware doesn't handle extended geometries well at all. Rhia
