I have spent a large amount of time trying to track this one down, and
I haven't managed to fix it. I can tell you about the following
results, though:

(Data gathered on system with slackware 1, XFree86 v2)

1: Not using xdm solves the problem. must log in in text mode and
then use startx or openwin depending upon your tastes. I don't count
this as a satisfactory solution.

Assuming you are using xdm:

2: don't start color_xterm from a menu. Any color_xterm started from
a menu or .openwin-init will suffer from the problem. However, xterm
is fine.

3: any color_xterm started from an xterm is OK.

4: any xterm or color_xterm started from a color_xterm with the
problem will also display the problem.

The above is independent of window manager. However, it can be
circumvented by logging in via the 'failsafe' method (F1 instead of
return after the password in xdm), and then starting your own window
manager. All color_xterms will behave themselves.

The only ideas I have had are that it is an environemnt problem which
is being propagated thgough to th 'child' process, but I don't know
what causes it. For a while I thought it was something to do with
xmodmap, but fiddling with it didn't help.

This still happens under X11R6, but that didn't come with a
replacement color_xterm. I think that the solution will lie in
getting the sources for color_xterm and debugging it...

Good luck! I've wasted too much time on this!
