I just tried that, and it gave the same result as the mod to .xinitrc.
Suppose it did the same thing, really.  I took it out of
app-defaults/XTerm .

My trsh windows still don't allow delete.  I'll go back to the
original method for the moment - use xterm and ignore color_xterm.
That worked perfectly.

What seems to be happening is my delete key is sending a ^D.  I get
the dir listing when I press it for the first time in a directory at
the end of line.  Backspace works fine. But I have problems with that
in trsh windows with ftp...  blech!

Thanks all for trying.  I'm probably being a little pickier than most.
