Steve,
	I had a lot of problems trying to install Linux as well.  Most of
the error messages I saw related to paging errors.  I first tried increasing
the wait states on SRAM in the Bios setup and finally ended up disabling
my external cache.
	You may want to consider this as a possible fix although it will
significantly slow your system.  I fooled around with just about everything
else I could think of for about a month and finally found notes on this
in the gcc faq.
