Setting up a SLIP server

Hi

I am trying to get my 1.1.54 Linux machine set up as a slip server, and
am having some problems. I dial in and uugetty picks up the phone and I
login as Saravis. sliplogin starts and I receive no error messages BUT at
the other end slip does not seem to get started - no ping, no route etc.

Now, I am not certain if I have got the other end (a PC running PCTCP V3)
set up correctly, so could someone cast a look at these files and see if
I am getting something wrong at the Linux end? Is there a slip log file
somewhere that gives more info on what is happening???

Here is my set up...

IFCONFIG reports...

I didn't see an sl0 in your ifconfig output. That should definitely
appear after sliplogin fires up. One trick to check this is to put

set -v
exec > /tmp/sliplogin.output.$$ 2>&1

at the top of slip.login. This will redirect the output of all the
commands that slip.login executes into the file
/tmp/sliplogin.output.<pid>. You can also put other diagonistic
commands in slip.login to check that all is going well.

In addition, You should check your routing tables (netstat
-r). Assuming they are correct I would next check that you've got your
mtu set correctly and that you've got a clean line (e.g. you do see
crtscts when you do a stty -a > /dev/modem).

Good luck.

You should use the newest version of sliplogin , that is sliplogin-1.3.tar.gz.
It works fine, but owners of an ethernet card should add a line
to /etc/slip.login like /sbin/arp xx.xx.xx. pub (i think an option is
missing here).

Sorry for posting again. I forgot to mention that sliplogin does
a logging is /usr/adm/messages and /usr/adm/syslog.

Many thanks to all the folks who are helpoing me with this - I am creeping
up on the correct setup and learning heaps at the same time.

I have a couple of questions at present.

1) When setting up a SLIP server, should I be using the point-to-point
parameter? What, in fact, does the p-to-p parameter do???

2) If the remote end of my slip line is a PC running slip, do I *have* to
give it an IP number (it may already have it's own after all...eg a
laptop that moves from a direct connection to a dial up one). If I
*don't* give it an IP number, how do devices on my net going to know
that its there?????

I have to go away on business for a couple of days and won't be able to
work in this until I get back at the weekend.

By the way, I have received a number of messages asking me to send info
on how to set up a routing slip server (when I finally have mine
working). Having looked over as much documentation I can, I don't see a
slip-server HOWTO. I am certainly NOT a unix guru, but am heavily
involved in training, so have quite a bit of writing experience (in IT).
WOuld anyone be interested in cooperating on the production of a SLIP
server howto (or faq)??? Is there one around that I should know about???

Get the Nutshell book (O'Reilly) TCP/IP Administration from Craig Hunt. He explains
very well how to set up both a PPP and a SLIP server ! For me it is THE book
for setting up IP based networks !
