I seem to be having major difficulties installing linux. I have two hard disks
on my system: a 327MB HD running off the primary I/O board and a 1GIG drive
running off a secondary EIDE controller(a GSI 18). I want to simply make
the 340MB drive a linux partition and the 1GIG drive a DOS partition(nothing
else). I have a boot disk with NET.GZ(I am installing over a network) and a
root disk with TTY144.GZ(or something like this). The kernel for the system
is 1.1.59. When I boot up and get to the # prompt(after logging in as root) I
do an fdisk /dev/hda and set up three partitions:
a 16MB swap space(even though I have 10MB RAM on my system)
a 225MB root partition
and the balance is an additional linux partition for accounts
Then I try fdisk /dev/hdb but I get an error stating that it isn't there.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. I need to specify the 1 GIG DOS partition in
the LILO configuration during setup. Anyone have any idea as to how this
can be accomplished and what my problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

------------------------| for the second interface this should be /dev/hdc
I think the drives are named as follows
/dev/hda } Primary IDE controller
/dev/hdb }
/dev/hdc } Secondary IDE controller
/dev/hdd }
this assumes ... the appropriate nodes are present in /dev (i.e. /dev/hd[cd])
and the kernel on the disk supports a second IDE card.
[I'm afraid I can't tell you the exact commands but I think theres a script in
the linux source tree /usr/src/linux/drivers/block/makedevs ?? or something
that will create the device entries for you, or read
/usr/src/linux/drivers/block/readme.ide]
You could just install everthing _without_ bothering with the dos partition
and then add an entry into /etc/mtab & /etc/fstab (this is all the setup is
doing) There is no need to setup dos initially.
/etc/fstab add:
/dev/hda1 /dos/c msdos defaults
/etc/mtab add:
/dev/hda1 /dos/c msdos rw 0 0
this assumes you have also created the blank directories /dos & /dos/c (if this
is what you want to call your dos partition).
And as long as msdos support is compiled into the kernel (almost guaranteed to
be)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Your first problem: As you said, your 1gig drive is on the second controller card and therefore not the 2nd drive in your system. Linux (unlike dos) assigns the drive names based on where they actually are, rather than on how they are encountered. Therefore your drives are /dev/hda and /dev/hdc. Your second problem: Why are you trying to fdisk a DOS-only drive under Linux anyway?? You should fdisk and format it under DOS, not Linux. To get LILO to see it, just put in your LILO config file: other = /dev/hdc1 table = /dev/hdc label = dos There is no need to use Linux fdisk to get LILO to see the drive. -- Jeremy Bettis -*- PGP Public key available -*- University of Nebraska INET: jbettis@cse.unl.edu "Those who stand in the middle of the UUCP: jeremy@tddi.UUCP,jeremy@hksys.com road are often hit by passing cars." <a href="http://cse.unl.edu/~jbettis/">Click Here</a>

1 - 2nd disk is probably hdc, not hdb
2 - it may not be supported, you might need a newer kernel
3 - because LILO uses the BIOS it may think the drive *is* hdb even
when the kernel doesn't. Help for the net on this?
4 - you can safely ignore the 2nd drive until you get Linux up and
working
5 - in no case would you use Linux fdisk on a drive with DOS only.
6 - for the big disk see EIDE.TXT about specifying physical vs. BIOS
geometry. I think you will need to specify physical, but I
haven't got a system like this to try.

For a better picture of this, at least with linux 1.2.0, try the README.ide file that is included in the kernel source tree. -- mlord@bnr.ca Mark Lord BNR Ottawa,Canada 613-763-7482 For the latest Linux kernel: ftp.cs.helsinki.fi:/pub/Software/Linux/Kernel/v1.2 For Linux IDE (big/many) help, see: linux-1.2.0/drivers/block/README.ide
