If math runs AFS like Glue and WAM do, just run AFS on your machine at home, then your entire home directory can be accessed from home as though it were local. Then you can just cd to /afs/math.umd.edu/foo/bar and work in that directory as though it were on your machine at home. Over a phone line, this is a bit slow for serious work, but you can always just do cp -ua /afs/math.umd.edu/foo/bar . on your Linux box and go have a refreshing beverage. Or just run it on cron. I can send you a find command that will delete obsolete mirrors from your Linux box. If math doesn't run AFS, it might be on NFS, in which case you might be able to convince your sysadmin to let you mount it from home.
