yes you DO need bios to run ncr on linux......... (it has 32b bios)
UNTIL you take the kernel upgrade from 
tsx.mit.edu pub/linux/ALPHA/scsi/ncr53c810
THEN you dont need it. but it is not YET supported in std-kernel.
