Care to explain this? You're the first person I've seen
  complaining about PCI-based SCSI controllers.

I am only complaining about PCI SCSI performance on the OPTi combined
VL/PCI Pentium motherboards (you omitted that part in your excerpt). It is
a reasonably well known fact that the PCI implementation on these boards is
a poor performer; I'm merely quantifying this data further. I have
compared identical system configurations where the only change was the
replacement of an OPTi VL/PCI chipset motherboard with an Intel Triton one,
and sustained SCSI hard drive performance went from a measured < 3 MB/sec
to over 7MB/sec.
