There is no theoretical limit to the number of devices. Eventually you will hit a practical limit of memory, table entries being overflowed, or CPU processing limitations in that the system just can't dispatch the processes fast enough. There is a pseudo limit of 256 devices. That is just to ensure that the table search routines don't run on forever. You can change the limit when you load the module or by a define if you build the PPP or SLIP driver into the kernel. >Im looking to setup a SLIP/PPP server and read >somewhere that the max SLIP connections was 8 >sl0->sl7 but this may have been for an earlier >kernel version. You must have been reading about some other operating system. The previous limits were more likely 4 or 16 devices since the table entries were statically allocated. If it will help, I know of at least one ISP which is running 128 simultaneous PPP connections on one system. Jon make one of his computers a 'super' terminal server. It is built with 4 32 port RocketPort cards. -- Al Longyear longyear@netcom.com
