I think I know what you have in mind. In telegraphy, they use a lot of
funny three-letter abbreviations starting with Q and X. These originated
with the railroad, where the telegraph was first used (prior to telegram
service for the general public), and have passed into the lore and
practice of amateur radio. I think they may also be used for ship-to-ship
communication, which is another of the last bastions of Morse code.

On the railroad (and sometimes in ham radio today), when one party grew
impatient with the slow speed with which the other party tapped out Morse
code, they send the signal "QLF", meaning, "Now try tapping the key with
your *left* foot!"
