Slow Modem

Thank you all who gave me help getting my modem and Netscape running. I
finally can connect using Usernet and then my Netscape works as well.

Now, my first question is, I have a SupraExpress 56i modem and I am
getting incredibly slow connection rates. Generally less than 1k. I
have the modem speed set at 115200 but that obviously isn't making any
difference. Anyone know what I can do to increase my connection speeds?

My second question is, how do I set up priveledges so that I can start
up PPP as a user. Currently I can only connect as root and would really
rather not do that.

Here's some system info...

RH6.1 running on an AMD K6 -233 Mhz
SupraExpress 56k internal ISA modem
Using Usernet (rp3 1.0) to connect
Netscape 4.61
X-Chat IRC Client

Could it be your modem init strings? Check the modem manual or website for

these strings.

from Linuxconf, client tasks, ppp, in your ppp setup, select
Allow any user to (de)activate the interface

This is a pretty old ver of Netscape. You should probably upgrade to 4.71

Your modem's connection depends on the noise in your phone line and the
capabiltity of your ISP. Full 56KBps may not be possible if your ISP isn't
56k V90 capable. make sure these are not part of your problems.

If you're using RP3, you shouldn't have to worry about whether you can
connect in your user account: RP3 *should* take care of this for you.

From your user account, go to the RH PPP Dialer, or create your account with
the Dialup Configuration Tool. You'll be required to enter root's password,
but this is because you're going to be making configuration changes.

I had the same problem with a VERY SLOW modem!
seemed I changed the init string from the default to
AT &FV1 &C1 &D2
ADD M0 if you don't want that dang sound

Worked for me.

since it's an internal modem: make sure you don't have an IRQ sharing
conflict between
this ISA modem and the onboard COM port(s). Either retool the ISA card
using setserial
(and perhaps jumpers) or disable the onboard COM port via the BIOS.
Carefully look at
the output of
	dmesg | grep tty
and see if they make sense.
