Setting up dial-up, email etc

Hello

I'm a new Linux-user and are excited about the enthusiasm the users of the
Internet shows for this operatingsystem. And now me too :-)

I have some questions though:

1) How do I setup a dial-up to my Internetprovider? (A how-to would be
nice)
1A) Which programs do I use?

2) How do I setup my soundcard (SB16)?

Yours

Look at the Net and PPP howtos.

You use PPP. I suggest you hunt a program called EzPPP if you
are using X windows, as it has a nice simple interface.

Else you just set up PPP as per the howtos.

You have to recompile your kernel. Make sure you have
the kernel source installed, go to /usr/src/linux
and read the README file. do make cohnfig or make menuconfig
or make xconfig, answer the questions, make the new kernel
with soundcard support, and reboot.

Then you need to get programs that use the soundcard.

Try ISP-Hookup-HOWTO. You'll probably also want to read PPP-HOWTO and the
PPP-FAQ.

"make config" or " make xconfig", that is, configurate your kernel

Look in your system under the directory /usr/doc/faq/howto/ for loads
of howto's on Sound, PPP and more.

If you don't have them, surf over to any of the usual linux web
sites. http://www.linux.org is a good start. Howto's are all over
the web.

If you are really a newbie, you should seriously consider going to
your local bookstore or computer store and seeking out a book on
Linux. "Running Linux" is a favorite. You might also want to look
for "A Practical Guide to Linux" by Mark Sobell.

have fun.

Hi:

If you are short of capital or a long way from a bookstore that stocks books
on Linux, a free and excellent alternative is a DOS readable text document
called 'install-guide-2.2.2.txt' available at sunsite.unc.edu,
'/pub/linux/distributions/slackware/docs/install-guide/' or at
www.cdrom.com, '/pub/linux/slackware-3.3/docs/install-guide/'.

This is a 250+ page book that forms a major component of 'Running Linux' and
the first article in 'Linux: The Complete Reference' et al. Just drop it
into your favorite word processor, delete those portions dealing with side
issues, format for your printer (big left margins - small right margins),
print - punch and bind into a folder.

For the cost of paper and ink you have an excellent learning handbook with
index - It just doesn't get any better than that!

Top that, Microsoft!

And do have fun.

Regards,

Brian.
