I have successfully ran a Linux v1.0 server to manage a 24hr SLIP Internet connection for the past 2 years. The other day I "somehow" removed the /etc/hosts file and now the system won't boot because it is continoudly trying to dial out to our ISP. I have tried booting in single use rmode so that I can replace the hosts file but everytime I boot in single user mode the system mounts hda2 as READ ONLY!!! Tnhat does me no good. Anyway how can I boot Linux v1.0 in single user mode and RW the file system OR bypass the rc.local file on boot up?? Any help is GREATLY appreciated ... I'm in a HUGE bind here. Thanks for the advice! -- * Sean Williams, CNE | sean@umbc7.umbc.edu * * PC/Network Consulting Services | http://umbc7.umbc.edu/~sean * * 7914 Allegri Ct | Phone : (410) 360-6913 * * Pasadena MD, 21122 | Fax : (410) 360-6913 *

Thanks for the : advice! Sure. Just issue a "mount -o remount -w <mountpoint>". The remount option tells mount to change the mounting flags for a filesystem that's already mounted; the -w tells it to mount read/write. Alternatively, if you're using BSD init, /etc/rc.d/rc.S will probably take care of it. Good luck. -- Nalin Dahyabhai nalin@argus.rh.ncsu.edu http://www4.ncsu.edu/~nsdahya1/www/
