Sharing soundcards over networks?

I've got no soundcard in my main machine, due to lack of ISA slots/finance.
Has anyone coded something for this situation? The two machines are connected
by 10Mbps ethernet, which I figure should be good enough.
Any thoughts?

Yep. Look into rplay or nas.

ftp://ftp.sdsu.edu/pub/rplay/
ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/audio/nas/

Or, for a cheaper solution just put

rsh otherhost 'cat > /dev/audio' <file.au

In a script that needs it.

Hmm, usefull, thanks.
Though neither of the first two fits my needs really, I've had
thoughts about what I want to do, and netpipes seems to help a lot,
combined with simple recorders and replayers...
(Basically, I'm interested in playing with a "sound system" that is
made up of a simple tuner, soundcards, MP3 player, surround sound processor
(writing myself) and other goodies that can be easily done in software.
(such as delayed record ability, so I can tape the beginning of something
that comes on the radio, up to a few minuites later.)

The NCD network audio server is what I use. It allows audio to be send over
the network. You can find it at sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/apps/sound/servers.

Good luck.

<snip>

Argh.
It just all went horribly wrong.
I'd been playing round with unmaskirq on the hard drives of my
"sound server" to reduce recording over-runs, and it fried the
disk.
The really silly part is I had a working NFS link to my main box,
and could have probably easily fixed it.
However, I did the silly thing, and rebooted.
It's a bad sign when you get prompted to set timezone, on bootup,
especially when it's not in any of the startup scripts...
Now it won't come up at all, and I've no boot device on the system, and
the hard drive won't read on my main machine, due to some reason.
Argh.

Thinking about it, in this situation is there a way to remount the
NFS mount, as the root filesystem?
cd /nfs;chroot . bash
works sort-of, but not quite.
And why might remount -n -o remount,ro /
fail, saying "/ is busy" ... ?
