Entire systems halts during DDS-2 tape backup
#620

I recently purchased a Conner 4326 DDS-2 tape drive, and it hangs
off my Adaptec 2842 SCSI controller. Small backups < 500M under
DOS using Adaptec's software, or Linux (1.1.70) using tar seem to
work OK.

When I try doing large backups under Linux, it seems to start OK,
but my system locks up at around the 1 gigabyte mark. Only a
hard reset will restore it.

It's occurring when backing up normal user-level files, not device
file or anything weird like that. I haven't tested a large backup
under DOS, as the bulk of my HD space uses ext2fs.

Any help *greatly* appreciated.

This is more likely than not a different problem, but has anyone else
noticed that, should a backup try to back up /proc/kcore, Linux hard locks?
(This has been so in every version I've ever tested)

Just thought that anyone with a similar problem might like to know
that the lockup problem went away after a kernel upgrade to 1.2.8

Well, it is a different problem, as I excluded the entire /proc directory from
all my backups (because I too have run into this problem in the past).

This is because /proc/kcore is either your RAM or your swap partition (I don't
remember which). everything in the /proc directory is in a constant state of
flux, changing as you call and dismiss programs.

Hope this helps,
