I agree. I've bought 3 modems in the past month: Motorola Lifestyle
28.8, USRobotics Sporster 28.8, and finally a SupraFax 28.8. The
Motorola modem was OK but didn't support V.FC so I took it back. I
also had problems with it dropping the line (due to noise I suppose).
Ditto with the Sportster. One night the Sportster wouldn't hold a
connection for more than 5 minutes, so I'm taking it back (and yes, it
has the latest ROMs).

The SupraFax has the most features (V.FC/V.34, LED display, flash ROM),
doesn't suffer from noise dropouts, and has the most thorough documentation
by far. It even comes with a 6' serial cable *AND* a 25 to 9 pin converter!
I couldn't believe that. The LED diagnostics are really nice, I can observe
as the modem adapts its speed to changing line conditions. I almost always
get 28.8/28.8 or 26.4/28.8 connections (send/receive).

A lot of people will give good testimonials for the Lifestyle and
Sportster. But for my money (and experience) it was no contest, the
Supra wins hands down. Whatever you buy, make damn sure you can
return the modem if it doesn't work out. Buying a 28.8 modem is a lot
like buying a used gun: you won't know its quality until you shoot it
a few hundred times...

BTW, here's what I paid for each:

  Motorola Lifestyle: $199 @ CompUSA (30-day money-back)
  USRobotics Sporster: $209 @ CompUSA (30-day money-back)
  SupraFax: $177 @ WalMart (90-day money-back)

Supra has a nice www page at http://www.supra.com.
