Bitsurfr ISDN modem & Linux PPP - success ?

My ISP is now able to offer ISDN, so I'm considering upgrading my dedicated line to an ISDN circuit. Owing to local telco billing practices it is most economical for the ISP to call me. Since I'm only looking to run 64kbps, the ISP is recommending a BitSurfr ISDN modem at my end (he uses Ascend P400s). I've lost track of the state of PPP support in Linux. Can anybody summarise the gotchas that I will encounter if I go this way ? If anyone is actually doing this - taking an incoming PPP connection from a BitSurfr - I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences. Also, any comments about the internal model of the BitSurfr would be helpful. I gather that there's been a lot of instability with respect to pppd and recent kernels, what's the consensus at this point ? Pointers to FAQ's gladly accepted :-) -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grant R. I don't know about the state of the software, but I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't want to use the regular Bitsurfr with an Ascend P400. I don't think the Bitsurfr supports PPP. Rather, you would want to use the Bitsurfr Pro, which is a different model. I work for an ISP, and we are currently testing different ISDN modems with our service (we use Ascend MAXes). The Bitsurfr completely didn't work with our ISDN service, and although I personally haven't gotten the Bitsurfr Pro to work, I have seen another co-worker get it to work.

Well, I'm not sure what I could tell you with regard to the actual ISDN connection but I bought myself a Bitsurfer and its working fine on with my modem over the POTS (Plain old Telephone Service) port. I have yet to try the ISDN portion as my ISP hasn't gotten back to me with a couple of questions. If you have the choice get an external TA. That way you only have to run an RS232 cable between the TA (like a modem) and the serial port. You have to worry about getting drivers for the internal version (PLEASE! Anyone correct me if I'm wrong). Hell, I like the POTS connection by itself. when I do a ping while doing ppp to my ISP its returning a time of 160-170ms where as it was 200ms on my regular line. : Pointers to FAQ's gladly accepted :-) : -- : -------------------------------------------------------------------------- : Grant R. For this purpose, you might want to get the Ascend PL50, then you simply plug the PL50 into your ethernet. If you only run one host (and don't expect to add more), the PL25 might be a better choice. Best regards, Derick.

The BitSURFR supports PPP, just not MLPPP.

Could somebody please clarify one point here: when exactly does one need routing capabilities of PL50 (or PL25) box? Assume I have a LAN and one machine is configured as a gateway. That machine is connected to PL25 Ascend box, which in turn goes via ISDN to PL400 (or whatever similar) to the "big" Net. I'd ASSume, that in the above scenario, the only MAC address PL25 should see, would be the one of the gateway machine? And thus, there should be no need to install routing option? And only when PL25 (or PL50) is *itself* used as a router, one would need to have routing option installed? Please reply via e-mail. It is beyond me. If you need a PL25 as a router, than you DON'T need any other machine to be a router. Why have TWO routers (assuming a small LAN)? Hey, a Linux box is perfectly capable of routing packets, so why spend $650 on another one? The PL25 is made for people that want the ISP to do the admin for them, and to "give" them IP addresses to use. Here's why you might: 1) Linux's firewalling capability is really nice. 2) You can buy a cheap PL50HX or PL25HX, and IP_MASQUERADE. Some service providers make you pay for the size of your subnet. 3) After spending 80 hrs jerking with Ascend on one end, and a Combinet PC1060 on the other I gave up and spent the extra $400 for a PL50HX. On several dates, various people wrote about many things: I missed the beginning of this thread and it now seems to have strayed a bit from the subject. Could someone please email me stories of setting up Linux with PPP via a BitSURFR Pro? I've been working on it for almost a week with no success. Thank you.
