Hi There,
I cannot get ppp working with kernel 2.1.110.
ppp dialup works perfectly with kernel 2.0.35.
I am using Slackware 3.5 on a dual PPro computer with SMP.
If I go pppd -v from the command line I get the following.
pppd version 2.3 patch level 5
Which is what is needed for the later kernels.
Looking at dmesg for the boot of the 2.1.110 kernel here is something that I
think is relevant.
Aug 2 07:27:56 daveney kernel: IP-Config: Incomplete network configuration
information.
When I type "ppp-go" I get the following message in the /var/adm/messages file.
Aug 2 07:30:29 daveney modprobe: can't locate module ppp0
This is strange because I have compiled ppp into the kernel, not as a module.
I will also get the following messages in the /var/adm/syslog file.
Aug 2 07:30:29 daveney pppd[210]: Failed to open /dev/modem:
Device or resource busy(16)
Aug 2 07:30:29 daveney pppd[210]: This system lacks kernel support for PPP.
This could be because the PPP kernel module
is not loaded, or because the kernel is not
configured for PPP. See the README.linux
file in the ppp-2.3.5 distribution.
The interesting thing is that as far as I can see the ppp scripts reference
only /dev/modem. Here are the permissions for /dev/modem and /dev/cua1.
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jul 25 21:56 /dev/modem -> /dev/cua1
crwxr-xr-x 1 uucp uucp 5, 65 Aug 2 07:26 /dev/cua1
Another interesting thing is that if I run "make kernel" from the
/usr/src/ppp-2.3.5 directory I get the following.
[snip]
Installing into kernel version 2.1.110 in /usr/src/linux
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/bsd_comp.c is newer than bsd_comp.c, skipping

Adding Deflate compression module to drivers makefile...(already there--skipping)

This tells me that all is as it should be with the ppp code in the kernel.
The dmesg from the 2.1.110 kernel tells me the following.
[snip]
PPP: version 2.3.3 (demand dialling)

SLIP: version 0.8.4-NET3.019-NEWTTY (dynamic channels, max=256) (6 bit encapsulation enabled).

SLIP linefill/keepalive option.

eth0: NE2000 found at 0x300, using IRQ 10.
IP-Config: Incomplete network configuration information.

Any ideas much appreciated. I'd like to run the 2.1.110 kernel as the DMA makes
the disk access just so much faster.

Ummm, thanks for the hint. But thats not correct. I copy the bzImage file from the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot directory onto a floppy in this manner. dd if=bzImage of=/dev/fd0 bs=1024 Then I boot from the floppy. The login prompt says "Welcome to Linux 2.1.110". Thanks Graham : : I know that RedHat puts the kernel in /boot, but make zlilo puts : it in /. Solved the problem. I needed to choose the option which probed for the IRQ's of the serial ports as well as this for some reason I needed to change the link from /dev/modem pointing to /dev/cua1 to point to /dev/ttyS1. Don't know why but it gave an error message. Interesting thing is, before I compiled in the choice to probe for serial port irq's. Both setserial and uucico complained that the device was busy.
