I bought a "Linksys Wireless Cable/DSL Access Point + 4 Port Switch" and it seemed flaky if one of the computers was disconnected and it would lockup for a long duration. So I thought that this may be a faulty switch and got a replacement and the same thing happened. It seems to be ok when all the pc's connected to it and the switch are booted in the proper sequence. Has anyone experienced this before? I know that this is not a specific Linux question but all my pc's are linux ones :-) What is an equivelant and reliable device? Thanks in advance

Linux can be a reliable Access Point. I am using a Linksys WMP11 wireless PCI card running in Host AP mode. You can set it up as bridging AP, NAT AP or wireless client. It is much bigger than the WAP11, but at least I don't have to use windows USB to administrate it. I ssh to the box, which is located approximately 200 feet away, > > Thanks in advance

The recommended device in all applications is the D-link DWL-900AP
It's about $180.00 or less, depending on where you shop.
It is an external unit which attached to an ethernet port.
It requires USB, and Winblows, for the initial set-up, but once that is
done:
It can work as an Access Point.
It can work as an Access Point Client (perfect for desktop machines).
It can work as a point-to-point Wireless Bridge.
It can work as a point-to-multipoint Wireless Bridge, essential for
extending the Wireless InterNet.
I don't know about the USB setup running under WINE, but the windows
management client is SNMP-based and runs well under WINE. And no, you can't
use `snmpset` to manage it, since it uses a totally proprietary subset of
enterprise-SNMP and it locks up as soon as you try to walk the MIBS tree
with `snmpget`.
It is, however, only a one-port device.
If you need a good wireless access point and multiport router, the SMC
"Wireless broadband router" is quite good. I've had one up in the attic
running non-stop for almost a year.
see http://www.dlink.com and http://www.smc.com/ and look around.

Nope, that's the D-Link Air DWL-120 2.4GHz
I just checked that link, the price before shipping is $129.00
Still a very good price for it.

The offer is over now. Craig
