I cheated. :-)
I created a script called "NEWS", which I put into /bin.
The script looks something like this:

  NNTPSERVER=<my.news.server>
  export NNTPSERVER
  rtin -q -p lpr

Instead of running rtin, I type "NEWS", and leave it at that. :-)

Be forewarned, rtin takes a _long_ time to start up... I tend to start
rtin running whilst doing other projects that I _dont_ need bandwidth for
on my 28.8 line... Like writing projects, or cooking dinner, or reading.

I tend to use pine for news, though... Yeah, its not a threaded news
reader, but hey -- it loads in tolerably quick (compared to rtin).

I keep thinking of collecting news on my machine... But, first, I need
another hard drive... But then I couldn't upgrade my motherboard, or ram,
or net connection... I hate tough choices.
