 ...which is probably the most important thing you've said all day. If
you can't get any messages out of the modem at all, then you may have
either the wrong port altogether or the wrong IRQ.

 Try the following

  1) Use minicom to contact each port on the system in sequence.
  2) Move the mouse around while doing 1

 The point about the mouse is that it triggers some interrupts, and may
be enough to extract some life from a port set up with the wrong IRQ. It
did with mine.
