Hard Drive Question ???
#130

Hi all

system
redhat 6.0
cpu ibm 686 MII pr300
hda seagate medalist 6.5gig
motherboard EPoX EP-MVP3G-M
ram 64meg

I have read the man hdparm and have used it to set 32-bit I/O and
using_dma modes which has made the following improvements to disk
performance

keith]# /sbin/hdparm -t /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 6.53 seconds = 4.90 MB/sec

keith]# /sbin/hdparm -c1 /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
 setting 32-bit I/O support flag to 1
 I/O support = 1 (32-bit)

keith]# /sbin/hdparm -t /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 4.60 seconds = 6.96 MB/sec

keith]# /sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)

keith]# /sbin/hdparm -t /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 3.68 seconds = 8.70 MB/sec

now the questions

I have tried the -k and -K flags to stop the kernel from resetting
at boot but I think they are only for a soft reset ( the -K flag was
not supported by my drive) so what file do I have to edit to have these
set at boot and can I put all the flags in the one line (I need to boot
as it is duel boot and I still use win for games)

are the above numbers normal for this type of drive (udma 33) or are
there other things I can do to improve the performance

all help greatly appreciated
thanks in advance

/etc/rc.d/init.d/rc.local

is a good place to start with

Append them to /etc/rc.d/rc.local
