linuxconf problem (newbie question)
#173

I have just installed the 'workstation' option of Red Hat Linux 5.2
(Intel version). I then ran linuxconf. When i try to activate the
changes i've made, i get the following error:
"
The command:
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S85gpm restart
is taking longer than expected to complete.
Please take action
...
"
after which it gives me the option of skipping, aborting or killing the
command. I have tried this several times (sometimes not even changing
anything in linuxconf, just pressing activate), with different window
managers, and have even reformatted and reinstalled linux on the machine
a few times.

Any help on what this means and how to fix it would be much appreciated.

Hello David!

I can tell you so much that the problem is that gpm (general purpose
mouse) is the program that won't restart properly. GPM is the program
that enables mouse in consoles. It is not wise to try to start gpm while
running X-server.

Try disabling gpm and try again. Or you could try start gpm manually
while beeing root. Just type "/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S85gpm start" and se what
happens.

Good luck!
