Which hard drive brand ?

Hi Guys,

I need to buy a 2 Gig EIDE drive and I have a choice between:

   Quantum
   Seagate
   Maxtor

I was hoping to buy the Quantum as that was the largest for my price range.

Can you guys let me know if you had any preferences, and which one would
be the best drive in terms of reliability and abilty to withstand alot of
pounding, I was wanting to use it for a news feed so it will need to be
pretty robust.

Many Thanks

I would say Maxtor, I have a 1.3 G driver from them, the first was faulty,
they exchanged it with out any argument straight away.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'pounding' and 'robust'. If you mean 'fast',
then you might want to look at something a bit better than EIDE drives.
I've head news can be pretty heavy on disk traffic.
If you mean 'reliable' then you might want to look at the warranties.
Or you might want to buy 2 drives, and keep one on standby.

Of course, it's possible you can afford neither fast nor reliable, in which
case I'd go for 'large' ;-).

Hello..

Never buy a Maxtor ... I have had 2 and they both have had to be
swapped over because they have bad sectors on them .. or the heads crashed.
I have had about 5 friends that i know of with exactly the same problem.

Advice: go for the 2.5gig Quantum if u can afford it .. or the 2gig range as
they are reliabe and fast. Also make sure to see whether your bios can handle
these large drives before you buy it .. but the only way to find out would to
plug it in :)

Many Quantum drives are labaled as "mode 4". Do you know what
means? I have a Promise 2300 EIDE controller, do you think it
will work?

My 2c worth.

In an effort to get a reasonable Linux beasty running at home, I recently
bought a Quantum Sirocco 1700 (1.7Gb) ($330 if that a good price I'm
happy, if not I don't want to know about it 8^). I had a choice of running
a drive off my SCSI card, or off a EIDE card - price won out.

Runs nicely off a VL bus EIDE card, has Win 95 and Linux sitting on it.

I have had a bad experience with Seagate in the past, and my previous
Maxtor drive was ordinary (but then again, it is about 4 years old).

Regards,
CSE.

I have had problems with Maxtor working with other drives as master/slave.
Seagate seem to be OK, but I've noticed a tendency to overheat and die on
several different models (other drives in the same bay worked fine). I've
never had a Quantum drive fail, but then maybe I've been lucky, but
they're were the most reliable based on my experience.

Maxtor 1.2 G and Conner 540M both have worked flawlessly for a year here...

Yes, you have. I've got a Quantum Maverick doing the overheating trick
exactly as described above. Never had a problem with a WD Caviar sitting
right next to it ( and WD is much quieter :).

Linux doesn't use the BIOS. If the bios doesn't handle large ide drives, and
this is going to be a boot disk, just have the root partition fully below
cylinder 1024. When linux is running it can access the entire drive.
If this isn't ever meant to be a boot disk, don't worry about it at all, linux
will see the entire thing.

With so many happy quantum customers here, I was going to keep my mouth
shut, but just about the only thing I liked about my last quantum was
that it was or seems fast, but it died under warranty and the shop I got
it from let me exchange it for a WD caviar much quieter :-), infact the
quantum used to wake me up at night sometime with its occasional high
pitch yawn just as I'd fall as sleep.

BTW, I leave Linux on all the time, is there a util to spin down IDE drives?

DON'T BUY SEACRATE! Quantum and maxtor make fine drives. Go with one of
those. (BTW: Seagate recently bought out Conner so expect their quality
to go way down.)

Try:

hdparm -S <timeout>

The timeouts are not obvious, so read the manpage. I have used this with
Western Digital 270MB drives so should work for you.

I have one Conner CFA-850A drive that I'm very pleased with the
performance of. But avoid the Conner CFS series disks, they only have
64Kb onboard cache (vs. 256 On the CFA series). And as for ithers to
avoid, the Quantum Fireball 1.2 Gig drive should be regarded as a
plague, it is not only under-cached, but noisy and slow...

There was a thread on this in comp.os.linux.development.system
( or was it .apps ? ) -- check it out. I haven't been following
it as I don't keep my box on all the time. ( In fact, I took the
cover off it so that Quantum in question does not overheat. That works,
but it also stuffs up TV reception, so I usually turn the machine off
to watch startrek :):):)

I've got a 1GB Maxtor and a 203MB Conner. The Conner I've had for YEARS! It's slow and
loud, but the darn thing just keeps on ticking! Never a problem with it. The Maxtor is
reasonably fast (Even better now that I've upgraded to Linux 2.0 - it supports PIO mode 4),
not all that loud, and so far, not a problem.

I own several Seagate drives (size 600M to 4.2G) and only had 1 fail in
the last 3 years. That was a 1G SCSI (the first I bought) and I had a
replacement in my hand 24 hours later (which is still working).

The Maxtor 71240AV is a worry.
I have personally had one of these die in a big way on me.
Since then I have heard of several Maxtor 71240AVs head crashing
and 2 from other linux users.

I have a Maxtor 7540AV that has not caused any problems however and it is
over 2 years old.

My main disk is now a Quantum Atlas 4.3 GB SCSI disk, and so far I have
had no problems....

FYI

I bought a Quantum Sirocco 2.5 Gig for $475.

I could not for the life of me get the mungrel to work.

I'll take it into the shop where I bought it on Monday, and ask for a hand.

I'm sure that it has something to do with jumper settings.

No you don't, you have a Promise EIDE ADAPTER (regardless of what Promise calls
it). IDE is actually the AT drive spec which places the CONTROLLER on the drive.

Yes, mode four is the fastest IDE mode and if the Promise is only capable of mode
three then that is what you will get.

I had similar problems with my Seagate 540 in OS/2. Wanted another drive to
devote to Linux, so I did a little research. I found SO many good things to say about the Wester Digital Caviar drives that the choice was easy. I have
seen preferences for it in Linux related FAQS. There is a company here in
Austin that does OS/2 pre-loads and support. They love'em. And now I can't
even here my WD accessing over my Seagate's constant whine. There's my
2 cents.

I'm running a WD Caviar 850M as hda for all except /var, which is on a
Conner 260M. The Conner is one noisy beast, Caviar is much quieter. No
problems with either at this point, but I have heard very good things
about the WD drives.

Seagate HAS in the PAST made some bad drives. A LOT of bad drives in fact.
I think their quality has gone up since aquiring CDC/Wren (what, 7 years ago?).
One of the only drives I've had a lot of problems with has been the Quantums.
All of the Quantum labled drives I've had fail at about a year. The last
one I got (2GB Grand Prix) a year ago has now failed TWICE (each time about
6 months apart).

I don't have any experience with Quantum's newer drives, but I do with Quantum
Support. No cross-shipping was a BIG sore spot for me. I went with
Micropolis to replace the Quantum, and I've had 3 drives (1.7, 4 and 4GB)
working for 3 years, 8 months and 4 months now. No problems so far.

Micropolis Tech Support can be a bit flaky (like saying they are going to
research a problem, then not calling back), but I have no complaints with
their QC dept.

Linux. No problems. These drives are Q.U.I.E.T. Barely hear
the motor, and just gentle clicking when reading or writing. In
contrast there is a DOS/Windows Maxtor 170 mB, and you can hear the

I bought 4 4.3GB Quantum drive in the past two years. Two of them die.
I also have 2 seagate ST15150 (4.3G Baracuda) which still works fine.

Check out quantum web page, it has full manuals there. We recently installed
two such drives, one gave some problems and we finally replaced it and the
problems went away. I wonder if this is a common occurence.

BTW, where did you get the above price (I assume inc tax, right)?

I've noticed that many of the modern drives get quite hot. My wife's
maxtor 540s both get too hot to touch. The IBM scsi in my spare machine
heats up uncomfortably too. I was begining to think they all do.

My 1.06gig HP (3323 scsi) drives don't heat up at all. They stay at
about room temperature. They may have better power converters or
something.

Are there other drives that run this cool?
Anyone know if the 2.3 gig HPs are as cool running as the 1.06 gig HPs?

Ditto on the Quantum Lightning. Like the Fireball, it's undercached and
seems like a particularly shaky model. I bought two 730S drives about 2
months apart at the first of 1995 and had both of them go out (after the
year of warranty time) in April and June of this year. Big thumbs down.

I've taken a liking to Conner and Micropolis drives.

I have had a Fujitsu SCSI 540 HD that has run flawlessly for about
3 years now. I bought it specifically because it had a 5 year warranty.
It is extremely quiet. Just an occasional little burble as it
recalibrates itself for temperature from time to time. Otherwise I forget
it is one even though it is right next to me.

I was recently looking to add another HD. Fujitsu does not seem to make
these 540 meg SCSIs any more. They only seem to offer a 1g SCSI fast.
Can anybody tell me if SCSI 2 and SCSI 2 Fast are compatible as far as
as a SCSI 2 controller is concerned?

Has anybody got any experience with IBM hard disks?

I have long ago decided that any disk without a 5 year warranty is
something I would prefer to avoid. However, plain old SCSI 2 HDs with 5
year warranties seem to be hard to come by, except Seagate which numerous
people have told me to avoid.

Me too. My Quantum Grand Prix which I bought last september, died
at the end of April. During the repair my dealer gave me an replacement
unit (same model). Guess what? After six weeks usage the drive starts to
show the same symptoms like my original drive. Then I got my drive back
from repair and after installing it, I recognized that the spin up time was
very long. I reassembled the system to check the disk and recognized,
that it was a much older model than the one I bought once (I never seen
something like that, the whole board side of the hd was coverd with dust.
They send back a complete other disk).
Now I have a brandnew Quantum Atlas but who know's who long this will last.
Never Quantum again!!!
My Conner and Seagate HD work for 5 years now with out any problems.

Panasonic optical worm drive

Hello,
I've got a Panasonic SCSI worm drive that I've hung off of my SCSI
controller. When I boot up RedHat, it says that it can't find a
partition on that device. When I try to run fdisk it says it can't
open the device. How do I set up this worm drive? Is there kernel code
that supports a raw SCSI write, or do I try to set up a file system
(extfs or otherwise).
     Any help would be appreciated.
     thanks in advance
