LILO won't work !??

I've just installed Slackware Pro and configure LILO to have DOS boot as
default and Linux with ALT, CTRL, or SHIFT (I thought) pressed on startup
and I chose to have LILO installed into MBR. But I failed, everytime DOS
is chosen as the OS to boot.

Linux can be boot from floppy without problem.

Could someone explain why and what the difference between installing LILO
into MBR or SUPERBLOCK is?

I have 1 GIG hd with /dev/hda1 for primary partition of DOS (C:\>)
/dev/hda2 for extended partition of DOS ( hda4 for D:\> & hda5 for E:\> ).

/dev/hda3 is Linux native starting from cylinder 1018 to cylinder 1424,
so I presume there is nothing wrong with boundary problem (>1024).

BTW, Linux fdisk reports different physical and logical ending of /dev/hda3
 phys (1023, 15, 63) logical (1423,15,63)

and more reports of differences if I have more Linux partitions after
/dev/hda3, does this matter? or I can simple ignore it.

For your reference, DOS fdisk reports as follow

Disk 1 504 Megs 100% usage	C: 330 Mb
				D: 120 Mb
				E: 50 Mb

while non-dos partition is using the rest of my 1 Gig HD.

Many thanks !

it usually can be booted from a floppy..

why 3 partitions for dos?

dos is only WORTH 1 partition... and a small one at that....

how about you use loadlin? it is my personal choice, and it also loads a
damn side faster than floppy boot, and for some reason lilo on my box
:)

Make sure you are using a compressed kernel as if you are not then it will
be to large, according to lilo, and so it only installs the dos as specified.

This error appears to be masked if you use the colour lilo config. I only
found the problem when I used the QuickInst in /usr/lib/lilo. This may be
the problem but I don't know.

	Happy hunting Steve E.

Just out of interest, once you pressed the ALT or CTRL or SHIFT key did
you type in the partition name of your Linux partition?

Well, there is a problem with the 1024 boundary under Linux, if you have
the latest Linux CDROM, check out the mini-FAQs on it. It'll tell you how
to set up your H/D for a drive that has greater than 1024 cylinders.

I would change your partition distribution, just give DOS one 100 MB
partition, that's all it needs! ;-) I think that's what the main problem
is. ;-) Linux gets a bit offended when it sees too much space reserved
for DOS. ;-)
