Help: compiling new kernel
#479

I am running RH5 2.0.32. I downloaded 2.0.33 and ran make
xconfig/dep/clean/install.

The first time the new kernel did not take hold because my lilo was
pointing to /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.32; I changed this to vmlinuz which is
actually a sym link to vmlinuz-2.0.33. I rebooted the computer a second
time and the kernel took. However, I lost my mouse and ppa Zip drive.

I thought I could revert to my original kernel by reassigning the sym
link, but the mouse and Zip were still offline.

I followed the instructions in the README (make the three sym links and
compile the kernel). If anyone has done this successfully, please tell
me how you did it. Also, is there any way to keep the settings from my
old kernel?

Make sure that your linux-newest-version.tgz is in the /usr/src directory

cd /usr/src
rm linux
mkdir linux-newest-version
ln -s linux-newest-version linux
tar -zxvf linux-newest-version.tgz
cd linux
make mrproper
make config
make dep;make clean; make zImage
cd /
mv vmlinuz vmlinuz.old
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage ./vmlinuz
lilo

Your done. This is how I recompile my new kernels. I have the Slackware
installation (3.3). If your new kernel is screwed, you still have the
vmlinuz.old
as the original. I suggest that you include it as a possible option in
lilo so that
you can reboot your old Kernel in a pinch.

Good Luck

Did you include the proper mouse and zip drive support in xconfig?
If you included them as modules:
make modules
make modules_install
