I have no problem posting from Linux - here's proof. With email, however, the mail queue is set up OK and all looks well. After going online, the queue is run. Subsequent check shows the queue to be empty. But I have had no replies after mailing various people. I have responded to helpful setup suggestions, and emailed friends just as tests. I must conclude that mail is not being delivered, yet I have had no messages from Demon (my provider) about failed mail. Can anyone suggest where I might look for the fault ? I'm feeling cut off :-( Regards Jeff -- JEFF ASHURST independent host -----------------------------(+44) (0) 1942 246383----n e t t e d----< jeff@ashurst.demon.co.uk thro demon.co.uk

You don't mention which mail transport you're using or how it is configured would you like to expand on it so that we can see if it's a problem with demon or with your config. -- anthony ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ alovell@kerberos.demon.co.uk | If at first you don't succeed PGP Key available from a server | alovell@cix.compulink.co.uk | Get a Bigger Hammer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks Anthony, and to others who responded, including Michael who emailed me but to who, because of this problem, I haven't replied to directly. I'm using sendmail. Taking clues from all your comments, I've hunted through all the logs and found mail status=Deferred for outgoing mail, with a hostname lookup failure against post.demon.co.uk (Demon's mail host) - which surprises me because the same host handles postings like this. Local copies of email addressed to myself are always delivered. I must now look through my setup to see why the lookup failure is occurring. If anyone can help short-cut this process, I will be interested to hear. Meanwhile, thanks to all who responded for shining the light. This is normal for a dial-up host, since without DNS access, post.demon.co.uk cannot be resolved at submission time - it doesn't matter. When you connect to demon, do: /usr/lib/sendmail -q -v and you should see messages being sent (or if not, the reason). (sendmail might live somewhere else on Linux; I don't know.) Also, you could look in your syslog file (/var/log/syslog on Solaris, again might be somewhere else on Linux). This records various sendmail logs. -- Andrew Gabriel Home: Andrew@cucumber.demon.co.uk Consultant Software Engineer Work: Andrew.Gabriel@net-tel.co.uk
