PC Locks up on boot - totally buggered

Apologies if the answer to this is well know, but I can't find it in the
various how to files I've read.

I'm trying to install Linux from the new Que Using Linux book, which
uses Slackware V2.

So far I can setup the Boot and Root disk, partition the hard disks and
run setup and create the Fifo loader and the Linux boot disk.

However, when I come to boot the machine totally locks up at the
CSLIP: code copyright 1989 Regions of the University of Calafornia
prompt.

I've reinstalled this about six different ways, to both my hard disk c
hard disk d, with minimum setup and lots of things added. The result is
the same everytime.

I am now totally buggered what to do next.

I got this to learn UNIX, so am not ready to start major editing of files
just yet - but a pointer to what I am doing wrong or to the right HOW TO
file would help a lot.

Regards all and any advice appreciated

The majority of boot failures I've seen tend to occur with failures in the
hardware detection. The major culprit for this seems to be an ethernet
adaptor. Do you have one of these? If so, I'd reccomend:

1. Remove the Ethernet adaptor from your PC.
2. Boot Linux (hopefully successfully!!).
3. Re-compile the kernel ensuring you only select options you need.
4. Re-boot with this kernel to make sure it works.
5. Replace your Ethernet adaptor.
6. Reboot again and see if THAT works.

If it still doesn't work, try posting more info about your setup etc.

OK - the problem seems to be that the kernel is getting stuck on some piece
of hardware you don't have. The best way is to use the "minimum" boot disk
possible - bearing in mind that this is just for installation - not for
*running* once installed. If you are installing from CD on a mitsumi CDROM
drive, you will want something like the sbpcd kernel. Once installed you
can recompile the kernel to use whatever drivers you have, thus optimising
it and removing conflicts.

Alternatively you could try getting down one of the boot-disks from the
Slacware installation:
src.doc.ic.ac.uk:/packages/linux/slackware-mirror/slakinst

The above is a bit of a guess ... go into the boot disk directory, and select
the kernel you want to download (using ftp) in *BINARY* mode.

Hopefully that will solve your problems.

You hit it in one - yep, I've got a NC2000 clone in that's causing the
problem. Is there a cleaner way of solving the problem, say some way of
installing the clone to its normal setting - I'm currently trying to make
sense of the Enthernet HOWTO on this but it's a problem I would like to
solve quickly

Thanks for the reply

Problem now fixed - it was a hex address on the NC2000 card - didn't
know that Linux was looking for it.

Thank folks for all the help - it was appreciated.
