I had installed RedHat 5.0 that comes whit Infomagic Linux Developers
Resources CDs (January 1998). This version comes whit Linux kernel 2.0.32
and I upgrade sucesfully my kernel to 2.0.35 from the standar way (not using
rpm file or somethig similar). installing all new /usr/src/linux directory
and preserving the old /usr/src/linux sources form version 2.0.32. No
problem. In RedHat 5.0...may I install kernel sources int diferent way???.

Other question. This distribution comes whit XFree86 3.3.1 and I try to
Install XFree86 3.3.2.3 but I have problems. I backed up my previously
/usr/X11 directory and Install XFree86 3.3.2.3 using standard procedures in
the RELNOTES (basicaly untar a set of files under /usr/X11 directory). When
I "startx" my desktop doesn't look like windows-like (RedHat 5.0 desktop)
and I don't have any menu and bar, olny ther xterm started and motif-like
desktop. In order to preserve my latest configuration I rename my old
directory to /usr/X11 and my desktop look like the original....but I have a
problem.....Netscape starting was dumped.. I try to reinstall Netscape again
and the same. I dont know where must be the diference....maybe some soft
link of some file.....i don't know......

I want to reinstall RedHat 5.0 XFree86, verin 3.3.1 from the CD....but i
don't want to reinstall all the system, just only Xwindows How can I do that
in RedHat 5.0 way?.........

How can I Upgrade to XFree86 3.3.2.3in a Redhat 5.0 environment?.

who says that Linux is different from windows 95?.... Is a joke.....

The method I use is to install the source to the kernel
version and make a link to /usr/src/linux. Example:

cd /usr/src
rm linux
tar xzf linux-2.0.35.tar.gz
mv linux linux-2.0.35
ln -s linux-2.0.35 linux

This means I can have several trees in /usr/src and a
link to the one I want to compile.

You would be much better of using XFree 3.3.2.3 . The simplest
way to do this is to grab the proper rpm files from Redhat
and do an rpm -Uvh XFree*.rpm. Download all the rpm files
to a single directory.

It seems that now that ETA has declared a ceasefire
you want to start a Holy War here ;-) I wish you
luck.
