Hi all, I have just installed Mandrake 7.0 on an intel 440BX mother-board with Celeron 300a and 64MB ram, and integrated on-board sound-blaster 16 sound hw (sound not setup yet). I have a pci modem plugged in, but not setup in mandrake. An S3 trio 765 pci video card is used and works in mandrake. I have used X86Setup to configure video etc. When i type XConfigurator on the command-line, a character-graphic screen says 'Please wait, Preparing X-Window Configuration'. At this point, everything is frozen and i have to reboot the pc. Also, when i type in kde, i get an error message like 'cannot open display'. But when i type kdm, then the kde desktop starts and works ok. When i installed mandrake graphically, to stop the pc from hanging, i had to select 'expert-mode', then select 'don't probe for pci devices', to prevent the hang. I think this might have something to do with XConfigurator hanging. How can i make Xconfigurator not hang? -- ******************************************* * Russell Shaw, B.Eng, M.Eng(Research) * * Electronics Consultant * * email: russell@webaxs.net * * Australia * *******************************************

You ought to try an run XF86Setup and to get KDE going - type startx. Xconfigurator had a bug in the first version of 7.0.0. The bug doesn't seem to be there in the newest version 7.0.2. You also need to check if the S3 card is a "3D, 2X" model... These give trouble too. In article <391E2A42.F4D0FE8A@webaxs.net>, "Russ.Shaw" says... >When i type XConfigurator on the command-line, a character-graphic screen >says 'Please wait, Preparing X-Window Configuration'. > It might be better to just use /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config , that always works. Nasser

Hi, I've used XF86Setup and then xvidtune, (trio64V+ 765 card), and it works to good success, updating the video config file. I also got the sound-card (on mainboard) to work. However, running Xconfigurator at command-line or in KDE hangs the system. Does Xconfigurator have a configuration file i can modify? I also saw some error messages referring to fonts. I'll have to try and capture these for the next posting... Also, i found that Xconfigurator is a symbolic link to /usr/sbin/XFdrake. XFdrake is the one that hangs...
