X from NT to Linux

Hello guys,

I have a RedHat 5.0 Linux box and a Windows NT 4.0 machine connected
with a network and I would like to run a X server on the NT machine to
run applications on the Linux machine. I have X server software
installed under NT (X-Win32), but I can't to get it all to work.

I think the problem is not in X-Win32 but in Linux. How should I
configure the system? X-Win32 offers three methods: rsh, rexec and XMDCP
(but I'm not running xdm). X-Win32 asks for a command to send to the
other machine; I filled in "/usr/bin/X11/xterm -ls -display $DISPLAY &"
(X-Win32 sets $DISPLAY to <ip-address>:0.0).

Well, even before I read your mail I downloaded MI/X, which said I to
telnet, set DISPLAY and issue xterm or whatever, and it worked. I tried
the same in X-Win32, it works. It's not really the way it should work,
but it works.

I have found that the easiest way is, don't run startx, instead in your
rc.local file put these 2 lines at the end

/path.../xdm
/path.../xhost +

then x-win32 will see your linux box as an xdmcp server, when you connect
you will be presented with a login screen.

the other advantage to this is if you reboot linux then you dont have to
touch the console before you connect from nt (this was usefull in my case
as the linux box was on a different level at work :-) )

hope this helps,

Doy

Hi,

If I understand correctly what you want to do: remotely displaying apps
running on Linux on a Windows box, you might be better off using VNC
(stands for Virtual Network Computing). It is free software (in the GNU
GPL sense) and can be found at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/.

I've used it and it works fine. I think there's one difference: X-Win
(if I'm not mistaking) allows you to have an X-window as an ordinary
window in Windows. Using VNC you have a view of your whole X desktop.
Shouldn't be a problem, I think.

Good luck!

Bart
