I have Linux+JE4 (by LASER5) installed over my Linux 1.3.60 elf. I am able to run Kterm and Kon and use vi to input and view Japanese characters. However, I am having trouble using motif 2.0 with X11 release 6. The setlocale() command does not want to recognize my locale of ja, ja_JP or ja_JP.eucJP. When I link in X's version of Xsetlocale() instead of the standard setlocale() X is able to set the locale without complaint. The application will display Japanese characters but I cannot input any. When I try to explicitly call XOpenIM() I get an error. I do not know what or where various input methods are called and so have not set XSetLocaleModifiers to anything. I am currently running cannaserver as my input Japanese Input deamon. Is there any Help out there? David.

I believe the Linux's X11 is compiled with -DX_LOCALE flag, so you
have to compile your program with -DX_LOCALE. Makefiles created
by imake is a good example for your Makefile.

What input method do you use? Cannaserver cannot respond directly
to XIM. I assume you're using kinput2.
Motif App. <---> kinput2 <---> canna
(1) (2)
You wrote you can use vi with Japanese, so the problem is the
connection (1) above. The possible problem is that you have to
set XMODIFIERS variable as '@im=kinput2'. You have to call just
setlocale() (with -DX_LOCALE) and XtSetLanguageProc()
subsequently with right LANG (or LC_ALL) and XMODIFIERS, so that
you can input Japanese with your Motif application.
