Strange NIC - Ping OK, But No Internet Connection

My computer is giving me a _very_ hard time configuring a network card.

I've tried 2 separate, brand new NIC's (in two separate PCI slots) - a
3Com and a Linksys 10/100. Both install just fine and look normal in
Device Manager, *but don't render any TCP/IP traffic*. My ISP can ping
me and it responds, but I can't seem to connect to the Internet.

Both Speakeasy (my Broadband ISP) and Linksys have exhausted all
practical
troubleshoot efforts. The DSL modem works fine when connected to another
computer, so I know its not that. The network IP, submask, gateway, etc.
settings are all pretty straight forward and have been gone over many
times.

MY SYSTEM:

Windows 98se
AMD Athlon 1.2 ghz CPU (running at 133/33 * 9.5)
Abit KT7A MB
256 MB PC-133 SDRAM
ATI All-In-Wonder pro AGP video card
Adaptec 19160 SCSI controller card
SB Live sound card
ADS USB-PCI 4-port card (Lucent chip)

That's it for the PCI & AGP bus.

Condidate cards are:

3Com 3SCOHO100-TX
Linksys LINE100TX(4)

Help greatly appreciated,

CK

We have the same PROBLEM!!!
I have KT7A-RAID motherboard, AMD T-BIRD 1.2 GHZ, 256M RAM, two
WD100EB hard drives in RAID 0, Diamond A50 AGP, no other devices except for
Linksys LNE100TX in PCI slot 3. I can not see my other two computers on my
network. I have spent hours with Linksys Tech Support, and with Micrososft
Tech Support with no results. The NIC card has been changed out with one
from of the
computers that works OK with the Laptop. I have booted both computers to DOS
and ran the Diag that came with Linksys Network In A BOX, and that works
great,so I'm sure the network stuff is OK. Everything else on my system
works fine, but then I don't have all that much other stuff like fancy sound
cards and the like.
SANDRA run great except for the Network stuff. Between Linksys, and Microsoft
we have been over every thing at least 10 times with the NETWORK set up. I'm
about to wear out my Win98SE cd from reloading W98. I'm at the point where I
am fingering my credit card to order a different Motherboard. My feeling is
there is something wrong in the PCI bus on this board. I have also tried the
latest 4in1 drivers from VIA, and the BIOS is at WW.

I ended up ditching the network card altogether and getting a
USB-Ethernet adapter. End of problem...

It was a little temperamental to install, but I'm up and running just
fine now. The ADS, Belkin or 3Com would be good choices based on my
(late night) research.

Good luck and feel free to write me privately if you need any help.

Regards,

CK

Just one thing to remember:

The NIC connected to the Internet HAS to be set up with 10Mbps HALF DUPLEX,
it won't work otherwise!

Thanks, but I'm not sure what you mean by "HAS" and where in Windows can
I adjust the 10 mbbs and duplex settings?

By "HAS" he means MUST. Change the settings using either the network control
panel or depending on the card it may have its own config.

Make sure your computer has a DNS server to go to. A way to check if it is
a DNS issue is to enter an IP address of a web site. If your browser can
hit it, then you need a DNS server IP address for your TCP/IP properties for
your NIC.

Since I am typing on a computer with a 100MB NIC, and it is operating in
that mode right now, I don't follow your logic at all. Maybe you mean for
direct connection to a cable modem or a DSL modem?
