Bad tape errors with Conner 4Gbyte SCSI drive

I'm using Conner's 4GByte (with compression) SCSI minicartridge tape drive with Arcada Backup Exec v5.01, under Windows NT 3.51 SP3. Occasionally, a tape backup operation will "hang" Arcada and I have to kill the process. Thereafter, I cannot append save sets to the tape, I get reports of I/O errors from Arcada. This is very irritating. It means that I'm not, on average, getting full capacity from these tapes. It is *not possible* to format these tapes! Has anyone else seen this problem with this drive? Solutions? -- David Arnstein arnstein@netcom.com

I have the same drive, but on an Adaptec VL bus SCSI system. I also use the NT 3.51 backup software. I've never had any problems. Since the OS doesn't use compression I wonder if that might be a problem. I don't know Arcadia's rep for reliability. Also, contact Conner and ask them about alternate settings for your tape drive in the SCSI BIOS table. Regards

I am using the Conner tape drive with an Adaptec PCI SCSI and NTBackup; if I turn on hardware compression in the software, the tape drive hangs. If I turn off hardware compression in the software, but leave the hardware compression jumpered to on on the tape drive, no problems. Hope that helps.

I did have some problems using NTs backup software, a conner 4 gig drive and a wangdat tape unit using a VL bus Rocket 2 board with an Adaptec controler ( VL or ISA ). This was cured in the end by going to PCI. I don't recall if I have hardware compression enabled or not. J/. -- John Beardmore

I had a lot of "bad tape errors" on my HP DAT (Win 3.1, NCR810 contr.) and finally I found out how important it is to clean a DAT drive regulary.. er... after using a cleaning tape it worked fine again. But sorry, don't know how to solve a problem with a tape drive, that works not with one system and works well under another... :-( greets, Vera

We've run into a lot of those type errors, as well as messages that the
tape isn't properly inserted, etc.
The solution is a wierd one, although it works. What we've done is put
the tape drive on it's own scsi host adapter. The problems have
disappeared completely. We've done this to 5 machines, uning eithe
NTBackup or Arcada Backup Exec.

DITTO ! I came upon the same solution to this problem whe using 4 hp jetstore 8 Gb DAT drives on HP net servers. Lots of bad blocks and controller errors. SO... I tried running the tape drives on their own HBA's. Voila! I've talked w/ MS tech supp about this. They claim befuddlement. Hmmm... maybe they should pay us $195.00 per incident....
