Macromedia rips off new Director buyer

Sometime in January I purchased a new CD-ROM cutter and a version
of Macromedia Director 4.0. I'm planning to put together a
multi-media CD and planned to use Director as my tool for doing so.

Well as it turns out, last night I discovered that Macromedia
is releasing Director 5.0. I contacted their customer support
to see about an upgrade. I was told that it will cost me
$399 for that upgrade even though I just purchased the product
and am at this point still only reading documentation to
try to understand how it works.

To say that I consider this to be a rip off is an understatement!
This version of Director is costing me something like $1200 after
the upgrade. That's outrageous!

As a general rule most companies will extend a 90 day grace
period during which they will send free upgrades to new
purchasers of their product. Some companies will go six
months. I was told that Macromedia only has a 30 day free upgrade
period. In this case it begins sometime in Febuary. So those who
bought Director just a few weeks ago are stuck for another
healthy chunk of change.

Customer support? Huh, that's a joke. I discussed this with
representatives of Macromedia and they've given new meaning to
the word "inflexible." Looks to me like Macromedia is just another
big company that's just out to gouge their user base for every
penny they can.

My suggestion for prospective Director buyers is to think twice
and make sure you know what your doing before you plop your money down.
If I'd known then what I know now I would have thought long and hard
about making such a purchase.

Well, not everybody at Macromedia is inflexible. John Dowdell, On-line
Technical Support for Macromedia is quiet active and very willing to
help you, if you have technical support questions. You can usually
find him on CompuServe in the Macromedia forum or lurking about in the
comp.multimedia newsgroup.

Not sure if John can help you with the upgrade problem, but you never
know.

Yep, try out the brand new GLpro for Windows - there is a free, fully
featured preview version on www.gmedia.net in the Windows area.
It runs far faster than Director on any Windows platform, requires far
less memory to run and is used to produce commercial multimedia for
the likes of Compaq, Creative Labs and CompuServe. And, you get access
to free updated versions made available every 48 hours.
