HELP Visual C++ Debug-crash!!!!

I am using Microsoft's Visual C++ Ver 1.5, and it started acting strange. When
I run any program that I compiled DEBUG (even if I do not run it through the
debugger) crashes the computer.
I then wrote a small "Hello World" program , which worked fine when compiled
for release. When I compiled it for debug and ran it it didn't always crash
the computer, it sometimes ran VERY VERY SLOWLY. When I ran it with the debug
window running it executed considerably faster.
I am using Windows 3.11 and MFC Library. I tried the brute force approach and
reinstalled it but this did not help in the slightest.

I would greatly appreceate it if someone could lend me a helping hand.
Thanks
