Win95 installation freezes : Hardware problem ?

I hope someone may be able to shed some light on this problem : When installing Windows 95 OSR2 (using the correct OEM preinstall tools), the installation routine freezes at the blue "Getting ready to run Windows for the first time" screen. The hardware is all new, and passes software diagnostic tests. Two new motherboards have been tried in this PC (both new LSI TX chipset boards) and the SIMMs have been replaced. I have also tried a different hard drive. The only common part is the CPU, an IBM M2 P166+ MX. Could this be the cause of the freezing ?

I have encountered the same problem (using SETUP.EXE from the CD-ROM). I talked to one of my techie friends who mentioned that I should NOT be loading any type of DOS on the HD, just use a simple START disk (containing FDISK, MSCDEX.EXE and some other basic programs) and to use that to try to load windows up. I will try it again this weekend, but I'm tired of trying and trying and trying... If someone could tell me the correct procedure to installing windows95, I would be very grateful. If you're having problems starting after the setup runs ok then it's likely that a Plug n Play device is conflicting with a legacy device. Try starting in safe mode (hit F8 at the "starting Windows 95" message) and setting up devices manually. If it starts ok in safe mode but keeps hanging on rstart in normal mode then try removing all extra hardware (sound card, network card, modem etc) & restart. Put the cards back in one by one until you find the one causing the problem. >I have encountered the same problem (using SETUP.EXE from the CD-ROM). Setup.exe works fine and detects the hardware. -- Gary White Michigan, USA mailto:gary.w@usa.net mailto:garywhite1951@worldnet.att.net ICQ Pager: http://wwp.mirabilis.com/575452

Matt, freezeup on safe mode sounds like one of your devices installed has the same interupt as another driver device, cd-roms or sound cards are good for that. You need to check all interupts and make changes. At the 'Load the Windows graphical user interface' prompt, the error "Not enough extended memory available to run Windows" message appears. Currently the system is using 2 x 16MB EDO SIMMs. Any ideas why it should report this error ?

Can your board actually handle the memory? Check to see that the memory is actually working properly and your computer is actually seeing it. If that isn't the problem, try using one 32 meg EDO or replacing the memory. The error you are describing usually only happens when someone trys to run windows95 full install with 4 megs of ram in there computer. Matt West wrote: > "Walter R. Problem solved : The cause of Win95 setup freezing and the "not enough extended memory available to run Windows" error messages was due to the CPU. The IBM M2 P166+ MX was replaced and Windows now installs fine. I tried down-clocking the original CPU, but this made no difference. Strange that a faulty CPU causes this error message !

I know the problem has been solved but I thought I'd share my techniques : >>actually seeing it. If that isn't the problem, try using one 32 meg EDO That won't work because pentium boards must run with matched pair simms. If I have problems installing os software on a new system, I first replace the memory. If this doesn't work I go into the bios and disable both the level1 and level2 caches (internal and external) this will usually fix any processor related problems. If it *does*, check the CPU voltage settings are correct. If they are correct you can pretty much bet on a duff cpu. Although it will solve the problem it's not practical to run a system without cache so return to your vendor with a bat ! Andy You know you need a holiday when you say : "I'm very tempted to install the Windows 98 beta this weekend".
