Running Dos Games from Win95

Hi all,
I've got a few questions regarding running my sound blaster in Dos games,
while running Windows 95.
I want to play a few games (such as Transport Tycoon) but when I run the
computer in Dos Mode, the sound blaster will not work.

I assume that I have to re-install the sound blaster while in dos mode, but
this caused another problem because the computer does not have enough
memory to install the software. (even though I've got 16Mb of Ram)

I am new to computers so I might be missing the obvious.....but I have a
question....if you install anything in Windows 95 (such as SoundCard) does
this still work while you are in Dos Mode, and if not how do I get around
this problem?

Any help would be appreciated....

Regards
Andrew Mitchell

You seem to have low conventional memory so you have more problems than
the sound card. At the DOS prompt run MEM and see where your memory
goes and then you will probably need a custom DOS PIF

or config and autoexec,

When you say Dos Mode, are you referring to the 'Shutdown to Dos Mode' from W95, or building a pif file to do a reboot to Dos Mode?

fsm - you have not helped the askers of the question at all by hijacking
their message. Test messages belong in appropriate test groups (in
Demon, demon.test, and I'm sure there are other similar groups).

Kate and Andrew - you need to have the appropriate driver(s) in
autoexec.bat (probably line will start SET BLASTER= followed by various
parameters). Check your manual for details. Ask again if you need help
with how to enter the line(s) needed if you can't find a way of doing
this automatically using the set up program. You are probably right -
you may have to install more memory.

Have you tried running the software from a dos prompt from within
Windows 95? This ought to solve the driver problem, but you may still
have the memory one. (I'm assuming at the moment you are trying dos mode
from boot up - apologies if I have misunderstood).

Your sound card should have drivers for win`95 and dos
Install them seperately
Don`t run any games in win/dos mode.
Instead make a system floppy and copy your config.sys and
autoexec.bat files onto it.
Delete from your c drive the two former files, 95 doesn`t need them.
then before you boot up, stick ya floppy in !
That puts you into real dos mode
When you get that up and running let me know, and i`ll tell you how to
make a menu from the floopy that lets you choose which dos game you want
run.
Good Luck !

>Regards,

Pardon me, Colin, but I suspect that this may not work. Some DOS
games just don't run properly from a DOS box. Kate and Andrew may
need to install the 16-bit DOS drivers from the disk that came with
their SoundBlaster. The drivers that come with Win95 will work in a
DOS box but not in pure DOS mode.

If their card is pnp, they need to install the Creative pnp manager
first, and then install the drivers. Drivers can be installed from
Win95, but the pnp manager must be installed from pure DOS mode and it
has to load in conventional memory, which it needs almost all of.
Their 16 MB of RAM is _not_ the problem.

I had this same problem with one of my machines, and I tried
everything under the sun to load apps high and free up conventional
memory, only to get an error every time I tried to install pnp
manager. In my travels, I did come upon others who got it to work,
but I never was able to get "system" out of my conventional memory
(it's not there on my other machines, naturally).

I've asked before, but if anyone does have the DOS drivers for
SoundBlaster (I have SB 16 pnp), would you please help me get them so
I can install them manually (perhaps you could post them to a binaries
group)?

Yes, I know that the drivers are available on the website, but I need
them in extracted form!

Finally, Colin is right in that if you can get a game to run in a DOS
box, you can get sound this way. Unfortunately, Kate and Andrew said
they are "new to computers", because another problem is that many DOS
games (particularly older ones) want that sound card to be on IRQ 5 or
7 (and they are probably saying "what's an IRQ" and shaking their
heads right about now. I seem to recall, for example, that "Blake
Stone" had no sound if the card was on IRQ10, and "One Must Fall 2097"
crashed from a DOS box until I shuffled some things to get the sound
card to IRQ5.

To see what IRQ your sound card is on. click the start button, move to
"settings", click on "control panel", double click the "system" icon,
click the "device manager" tab, click "computer" at the top, click the
"properties" button, then the "view resources" button, with the "IRQ"
function selected. See how simple Microsoft has made everything for
us? :) Kate and Andrew - if your IRQ for your SoundBlaster is not 5
or 7, check back here and we'll help you get it right (hopefully :)).

Jon

You may be right, but it's worth them trying - if it does work, then it
saves them a lot of trouble.

I agree. I _think_ that's what I said, but in a slightly different way!

I think I've got what you need - no longer have the SB16 since I traided
it it for a an AWE 64, but I've still got the disks. E-mail me please
re. details (not sure where you are, but might actually be simpler to
post you the disks if not too far away). Also need to check version
numbers, etc.

No. Win95 GUI and Win95 MS-DOS Mode are effectively two different
operating systems sharing a file system; Windows 95, and the operating
system formally known as DOS. So the drivers are different!

Why not? Works a hell of a lot better than Win3.yuk did!

Bad idea.

Bad idea.

Worse idea, leaving system to boot A: before C: (thus exposed to boot
sector virus risks).

>That puts you into real dos mode

So does Shudown, Restart in MS-DOS Mode ("Exit to DOS.pif") and a lot
more elegantly than faffing around with "boot disks".

1.bat, 2.bat, 3.bat, I take it?

Better yet, edit in DOSShell as the target of "Exit to DOS.pif" and
use that as a menu - complete with context-sensitive help.

That's why I said "pardon me" and "I suspect." We're both just trying
to help Kate and Andrew. It's cool, mon.

I've found that Win95 is very quirky when it comes to running games in
a DOS box. Most, but not all of the time, I'm able to get them
running with a little tweaking (e.g. reset screen resolution, avoid
shortcuts). But for non-techies, it can actually be easier to get
those DOS drivers loaded and just run their games from pure DOS mode,
a la Power2Play.

I do have the SB16 disks - the problem is that the drivers need to be
extracted, which requires installing Creative's pnp manager, which
must be installed from full DOS mode, where I can't get enough
conventional memory freed up after trying everything you could think
of. :) But thanks for the offer.

If it's jumper and stay, you're A for away.

If it's Plug-n-Play, it barks and wags a tail...
...but can be house trained ;-)

>>>>Kate and Andrew - you need to have the appropriate driver(s) in
>>>>autoexec.bat (probably line will start SET BLASTER= followed by various
>>>>parameters).

The Set Blaster statement loads no software and takes up no memory
that isn't already allocated to Command.com's environment anyway.

Some cards require a bit more than this; they either need TSR's
(resident drivers) YUK YUK YUK or they need a PnP wake-up call.

Some PnP cards that need to be woken up need the full ghastly PnP
manager treatment; Creative's pay-more-for-less-compatibility cards
are about the only ones I know of that need this, and even then,
usually only if the mobo doesn't have a PnP BIOS.

Other PnP cards use a small non-resident .com or .exe to wake them up,
and this can be used at any time, rather than embedded in Config.sys

Background; PnP requires cards to remain inactive until the PnP
manager "calls" them to ask them what they are, what resources they
want. Then the PnP manager assigns the cards resources according to
what isn't used by something else. That's the difference between
"jumperless" (settings persist after set in software) and PnP.

In the case of a modern system, the PnP manager is either the BIOS PnP
extension, the operating system (Win95/98/?NT5) or both. If you have
a recent mobo, it may have PnP - but these days there's often a
setting in CMOS PCI setup (careful here) that is Y/N for "PnP
operating system in use". If set to Yes, the BIOS PnP doesn't do
anything; if set to No, it wakes up the cards.

As Win95 exclusive DOS mode is *not* a PnP OS, you may have joy by
enabling this setting (i.e. "PnP OS = No"). Else a common dodge is to
go into Win95 GUI (which wakes up the PnP cards) and from there, go to
exclusive DOS mode (Shutdown, Restart in MS-DOS mode) without using
hard reset or power off - the card may continue to work this way.

>>>Pardon me, Colin, but I suspect that this may not work. Some DOS
>>>games just don't run properly from a DOS box.

Very few, actually; I can only think of Jill of the Jungle, Jill Saves
the Prince, Accrua Soccer CD and IndyCar Racing 2.

In fact, some work better in GUI than DOS mode, depending on the sound
card and RAM. Although you need to reduce default SmartDrv to get
Duke Nukem 3D to run in 8M RAM in DOS mode, from within the GUI it
runs fine! Also, games that require EMS get in the GUI without the
need for "Emm386.exe RAM" etc.

YMMV, hugely, and often by system. If you have a PC where DOS apps
that run 800x600 crash the GUI's SVGA drivers, you might share the
experience you mention. If you have a PC with a "soft" sound card,
perhaps a PCI one at that, you may find the GUI works better.

What are you talking about about? You do not even say who are
criticising (I assume from tracing the thread it is cquirke@iafrica.com,
unless I'm missing something). It would be much more helpful to quote
some of his text and say something _constructive_ about the bits which
you disagree with.

If it was him, he's said some useful things. I don't think he was
rubbishing your answer - just going for a different approach. Why don't
you take what he has said a section at a time and write a response? Much
more useful than calling someone by an insulting name :(

I'm here for the data, not for human interaction, and my responses are
issue-focused rather than sensitive about egos and feelings.

Sometimes I respond less kindly that other times, usually when
dubious, dangerous or flatly incorrect information is presented
forcefully as the Whole And Only Truth.

>your thread is just YOUR opinion.

Damn right I do.

"Punk" I take as a compliment, seeing as I spent 2 years playing
guitar for Private File and bass for Riot Squad in that era ;-)

OK, from the top, once more with feeling:

>-------

:>No. Win95 GUI and Win95 MS-DOS Mode are effectively two different
:>operating systems sharing a file system; Windows 95, and the operating
:>system formally known as DOS. So the drivers are different!

No opinion there, just the way it is.

:>>Your sound card should have drivers for win`95 and dos
:>>Install them seperately
:>>Don`t run any games in win/dos mode.

:>Why not? Works a hell of a lot better than Win3.yuk did!

It is my opinion that running the game without problems is better than
crashing the operating system. Better now?

:>>Instead make a system floppy and copy your config.sys and
:>>autoexec.bat files onto it.
:>Bad idea.

Reason is that you will end up with a boot diskette that is set up
with a Config.sys and AutoExec.bat that are optimized for the GUI; not
at all useful for running a DOS environment. In my opinion, that is a
bad idea, compared to files optimized for the DOS environment.

:>>Delete from your c drive the two former files, 95 doesn`t need them.
:>Bad idea.

Poster might have drivers for some obscure scanner or other device
that are required to run it, or a Set Blaster setting required for the
sound card to work with DOS games, or Path extensions required for DOS
and Windows 3.1x apps to run. If you delete these files (rather than
rename them on a test basis) you lose these settings.

In my opinion, that's a bad idea.

:>>then before you boot up, stick ya floppy in !
:>Worse idea, leaving system to boot A: before C: (thus exposed to boot
:>sector virus risks).

In my opinion, picking up a boot sector virus that can wipe out your
data is a bad idea. Leaving a system to boot A: before C: (the
default in CMOS) allows this to happen. Relying on boot diskettes
requires A:,C: boot order and thus poses this risk.

Plus, if you change the diskette, you get "Please insert disk with
Command.com..." whinging, etc.

:>>That puts you into real dos mode

:>So does Shudown, Restart in MS-DOS Mode ("Exit to DOS.pif") and a lot
:>more elegantly than faffing around with "boot disks".

Yep, that's also my opinion, based on the reasoning above. Based on
the above information, YMMV, but I'd be interested to hear why.

:>>Format your Hardrive - and cleanse your Soul !

A joke, I take it?
Or are you really that indifferent to your data? ;-)

"cquirke", I wouldn't worry about john's post - I'm not even sure it
was directed at you. Perhaps it was a purely random troll. In any
case, it contained nothing substantive, so it was only a troll. I see
this kind of stuff in the newsgroups all the time.

Your post was certainly relevant and useful.

Regards,

Jon

I agree with this. Troll probably also applies to his other two
postings. Rest of thread has certainly been useful, though. Thanks to
all.
