Maybe I am missing the point here, but isn't the easiest way to increase 
your path length to append your shell command in config.sys to read as 
follows:

SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\ /P /E:512

Again, you probably all know this, but just in case someone is 
wondering...
