It's not as simple as you say:
1. some 3.5 floppy devices have the pins (1-34) from left to right, some
   from right to left (for instance somes types of TEAC and SONY), and I
   believe, the 5.25 devices vary too.
2. the 5.25 and 3.5 devices have different plugs, you need an adaptor.
It's simpler you set the jumpers or you buy/press a new cable.
