I was not aware you could boot off the second hard drive EVER. Or so my 91 AMI BIOS believes - I have to disconnect my IDE hard drive to get my RLL auto-configuring 20mb Plus Hard Card to boot the system. I have tried other IDE drives, and still, whichever one the BIOS calls Drive 1 is the one that the BIOS uses for boot.

The OS/2 Boot manager and DOS want to boot disk 1 (or 0 as it should be called ) but a number of boot managers can boot other drives. LILO, Coherent Boot Manager and And the FreeBSD can boot alternative drives. But can they boot _DOS_ from an alternate drive? I'm only familiar with
LILO and I don't think it can boot DOS from a second drive. The OS/2
boot manager is able to boot both OS/2 and Linux from a second drive,
so it's in the same boat as LILO as far as capabilities are concerned.

Requires the secondary boot loader 'any_d.b' which I think installs a 'wrapper' that lies to the DOS boot loader as it starts running off the disk. Works well. Trouble with LILO is I dont think you could install it, with out having a running Linux system first, so it wont help the orginal poster. But it IS possible to boot dos of the 2nd physical disk, if the boot loader on the 1st physical disk can be set up to do so. -- Matthew Geier, | Desolation Road Railfan BBS and Dialup Unix matthew@sleeper.apana.org.au | (+61) 2 588 4615 matthew@cs.usyd.edu.au | An APANA Sydney hub.
